Codswallop CIC Statement Coronavirus (COVID-19)
It’s been an odd 6 months..
When lockdown first came about, we thought it would be a quiet 3 weeks and then back to business, full steam ahead with our summer programme. How wrong we were!
It looks like we are almost set to return to a little bit of Codswallop madness in a week. The government guidance suggests we can restart some of our groups, and we really can’t wait to get back in action. However, a number of other factors come into play:
A majority of our groups intentionally run at a loss. To ensure that we keep the arts as accessible as possible, to as many families as possible, we keep the session fees to a minimum and our sessions have been made possible by the generous funding from Leeds City Council via the Outer North West Area Committee since 2013. As with a lot of things, CoronaVirus threw a lot of things up in the air, meaning that the 2020-2021 funding for our groups has yet to be secured. However, we hope that if our bid for funding is successful, we will be in a position to restart our groups after the October half term on Monday 2nd November. This means there will be no community groups run by Codswallop CIC during the first half of the autumn term.
Secondly, our Music groups, Hullabaloo and Just Sing unfortunately do not yet have clear government guidance to suggest it is safe to restart. This is because singing is not yet permitted indoors for gatherings of more than 2 households and there are still extensive studies into the use of wind instruments and the transmission of Covid-19. We will however keep you informed as and when we are able to restart.
It’s been tricky for us at Codswallop HQ. Our core team is unpaid, passionate and thrive off seeing the arts become accessible. As with many arts organisations, the lockdown has been a financial strain. We have seen 4 original pieces of theatre and 3 touring productions cancelled, community groups cancelled and at times, it looked unlikely that Codswallop would survive to the end of 2020. However, restarting in November will secure our future and mean we will be able to bring an epic year of events, theatre, community goodness and art.
One thing we can be certain of is we would not be operating right now without the generous support in donations from our patrons, participants and the community. It proved to us that what we do is appreciated, needed and worth fighting for! If you find yourself in a position to support Codswallop CIC further, either as a one-off donation or continual monthly giving, head to www.codswallop.org.uk/support-us.
Over the coming weeks, we hope to announce some new, socially distant, family events, following a new format that we hope to develop to keep a presence in the community in a Covid world, whilst maintaining that sense of chaos that Codswallop is known for. So keep your eyes out and get ready to book!
Thank you for your support and your patience. We can’t wait to get back to it.
It’ll be a riot!
Jacob & Lucy
